At only 14 hands, Legacy is extremely small for an American Saddlebred. His growth was stunted
due to the malnutrition he suffered during the first 5 years of his life. Most horses are not fully
mature until 4 years old and good nutrition is vital in their development. Legacy arrived at the sanctuary over 10 years
ago. He was rescued from an abusive owner that would keep him locked in small metal shed that was never
cleaned of manure day after day until he would take him riding. Often this meant being ridden to a local bar where
he was tied outside for the night until his drunken owner would ride him back home the next morning and lock him
up again. Legacy suffered this abuse for many years. Always alone, always locked up in a dark, dirty
building. On the summer day that he was resuced, the temperatures inside were well over 100 degrees.
One
of the young HPS members, Cari Berns, worked closely with Legacy in his rehabilitation, gaining his trust and teaching him
the joy that was possible under the saddle of a kind and caring person.
