Cheyenne was part of a large herd of Saddlebreds that were seized by Cabarrus County law enforcement in 1999.  It was one of the worst cases ever seen by the county.  Scores of horses died under deplorable conditions and their owner was convicted of abuse.

Cheyenne and her pasture mate, Sophie, went to a home in the mountains where they lived for many years where they underwent rehabilitation and received the most basic of training.  Unfortunately, their new family was not able to keep both horses and they eventually arrived at the HPS sanctuary.

Sophie quickly found a new home but Cheyenne has not been so lucky.

Cheyenne was in our training program and was ridden by several HPS members while she waited to find a home.  Unfortunately, she developed EPM and is currently back in recovery.  We believe the EPM is a result of her being fed sweet feed for so many years before coming to the sanctuary.  Many horses in NC show that they have been exposed to EPM when tested.  Not all will develop this serious disease but those that do usually begin to show the signs in their late teens or after periods of stress.  We were first alerted to her EPM when it was noticed that she seemed to step harder with one of her rear hooves and later on had bouts of narcolepsy.

Cheyenne is being treated with natural supplements such as Evitex (a chasteberry elixer) and Super Immune Booster.  She is not being ridden at this time and is not available for placement.
