October 2009

Truffle came from Rowan county with her friend, Autumn.  She was in a muddy roundpen with no grass.  A few sprigs of hay lay in the mud.  Her owner was destitute.  No power, no food, no job, two small children, a starving dog tied to the porch and a crying puppy under the deck.  Neighbors reported that a third horse had died in the roundpen during the summer. The owner begged us to take the horses before they died.

Truffle was thin but she has an abnormally large stomach.  She has been wormed and checked for pregnancy.  Fortunately, she is not pregnant.  She has a tumor on her nose and is blind in one eye.  It is possible that she has cancer so we are treating her with holistic remedies.

She is a tiny girl, not even 13 hands, with a head that is large for her body.  This is common with horses that have been starved since birth.  Her previous owner said that she was an 8-gaited Tennesse Walking Horse.  That was a first for us!  It also seems that every black grade horse is a "Tennessee Walker".  She is gaining weight quickly and only time will tell what her future will hold in store for her.

UPDATE MARCH 2010:  It is obvious that little Truffle has DSLD aka dropped pasterns.  Her previous owner had stated that her boyfriend, a very large man, had been riding her.  There is no cure for DSLD at this time.   In time her remaining 'good' legs will break down.  HPS will continue to care for Truffle while she still has a reasonable quality of life before offering the final kindness of eternal peace.
