Concho, February '09

2009 is proving to be a difficult year for horses.  Often husbands and wives both have to work to make ends meet.  Many people work extra jobs to help pay for their  horses which are their recreaton.  Many sacrifice a lot in order to keep them.  But what happens when one of the spouses loses their job?  The horses lose out, especially if the horse is older and has special needs.  It will be the first to be given up when it becomes difficult to provide for the horse.  Luckily for Concho, a sweet little champagne colored Appaloosa with hazel eyes, she has found a place at the sanctuary.

Now fully recovered, she was a low 2 on the Henneke Body scale, reported to be 32-years-old and very weak in the hindquarter.  Upon arrival at the sanctuary, she was slowly wormed in stages and dental work was done as she became stronger and healthier.  Rainrot along her back was treated with warm betadine baths.

Concho has settled in well and has found a friend in Diego.  In her previous home the other horses would chase her off from her feed which kept her stressed.  We put aloe vera juice in her food to fend off ulcers.  She has gained her lost weight eating our soft leafy green hay, whereas her owner had reported that she would not eat the hay they had provided.  She also loves her soaked alfalfa cubes and looks for her meal as soon as the feeders arrive.

Concho was not a very trusting horse when she arrived at the sanctuary but now she will allow HPS volunteers to pet and shower her with love.
Because she is over 30 years old, Concho will make the HPS sanctuary her permanent residence.  If you are interested in becoming her Angel sponsor for $20 a month, please download the angel sponsor form at the bottom of the page.
