Renegade is the picture of health at first glance.  He is a large, well built, bay Quarter Horse with the sweet disposition that his breed is famous for.  In 2002, he was diagnosed with navicular disease.  A stable took him in and worked with him.  When they finally felt he was ready to be ridden again, he would stumble and slip.  The stable's vet diagnosed him with EPM.  Since then, the stable had been treating him with Bayer's Marquis.  The bills mounted.  Renegade did not improve.  He received physical therapy to stop muscle atrophy in his hindquarters.  Finally, the vet recommended that Renegade be put to sleep.  The people at the stable were so deeply vested in the beautiful horse they could not bear to put him down and asked HPS to take him.

Since arriving at the HPS sanctuary, Renegade has received chiropractic treatment.  The chiropractor feels that the horse's pelvis was broken at some point in his life.  She has seen horses with this type of injury before.  Our farrier came to the same conclusion the first time she trimmed his hooves.

Renegade was slowly brought back to health by having him step over rails and to walking up and down a gently sloping field.  As he gained strength, we slowly put him back under saddle and gradually increased his riding time.  With his beauty and quiet, sweet nature, he was a favorite at the sanctuary.

Renegade is a beautiful American Quarter Horse.  He is very gentle and quiet though a little stubborn and is appropriate for a beginner rider.  He was placed last summer with a family than ran a retreat in the NC mountains for people with serious illnesses.  They decided to get a team of horses to pull a wagon at the retreat and did not feel that having 4 horses would not be in the retreat's budget so they returned him to the HPS sanctuary April 2011.

Renegade is once again looking for a new home.  Hopefully, his next home will be his forever home.
