Corn Flower, February 2009

This pretty mare was found lying in a corn field in Iredell County.  She was too frail and debilitated to stand.  Animal Control was called to take her in and they kept her for several weeks hoping that her owners would notice that she was missing and try to claim  her.  Unfortunately, they never received any calls about a missing horse.
HPS was asked to take the mare.  When she arrived, she exhibited signs of long-term starvation.  She was stool eating and most horses will not do this unless starved for a long time. The mare rated the lowest on the Henneke Body Scale for scoring a horse's weight.  Her belly was extended with worms so she obviously had not been wormed in a long time.

The mare is about 23 years old and is such a sweet girl.  Our farrier removed her three remaining shoes and she was so easy to work with.  Dental work was done to her long neglected teeth and she has now returned to  her full weight.

Cornflower is back under saddle and we are working with her in the training/riding program to help her get back into condition.  She has a wonderful sweet disposition and would make an excellent horse for a beginner rider, child, or small adult.
