Sweet Pea and Dr Pierce, DVM in October 2008

Starved and neglected, this little pony was relinquished to Iredell County Animal Control by her owner.  She was rated a 1 (the lowest on the Hennecke Body Condition Scale for horses).  She had foaled in the spring, and it is no wonder that her baby did not survive.  We were very disturbed to learn that her owner had attempted to breed her again.  Examination from the veterinarian showed that, thankfully, she was not pregnant again.

Sweet Pea has returned to health and is now waiting for a loving home.  She can never be ridden due to a club foot -- possibly the result of an old injury that never received medical care.  Her fetlock has built-up calcification and her tendon is enlarged.  It will be important for her new home to keep her hooves trimmed properly and to apply DMSO to her injured fetlock.

Sweet Pea would be a wonderful companion horse.  She is currently best friends with Quera who allows the little girl to be the boss as she follows her out to graze in the morning and in to eat dinner in the evening.  Sweet Pea has a sweet disposition and is an easy keeper.  She has not had any health issues.  She loves to be brushed, have her neck and stomach scratched, and tolerates baths.

Please contact the sanctuary if you'd like to give Sweet Pea a loving home!
